Ronaldo scores 200th Liga goal with record breaking hat-trick

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 200th goal on Saturday when he scored three in Real Madrid's victory over Celta, making him the player with the most hat-tricks in the history of the Spanish league.

Having racked up 197 goals in 177 league games heading into the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Portuguese attacker opened the scoring with a penalty in the first half before adding a further two in the second period to reach the milestone.

Not only did he reach a remarkable goal tally, he also broke a record with his 23rd hat-trick in the Spanish top flight. 

Shortly after making history with the 200th strike, the attacker was substituted and walked off to a huge round of applause from the home crowd.

The 2013 Ballon d'Or winner is now on 23 league goals in just 13 games this campaign.

The Portugal star celebrated his Ballon d'Or nomination in stunning style by scoring all three goals in a routine win, which also saw Real equal Barcelona's all-time Spanish record of 18 consecutive wins in all competitions from the 2005-06 season.
The former Manchester United forward netted his first in dubious fashion as he converted a controversial penalty after he was deemed to have been fouled inside the area.
There was little doubt about the other two, though, as Ronaldo shrugged off several uncharacteristic misses to send Real on their way to a comfortable triumph.
Ronaldo scored his second with 25 minutes to go, firing in from the edge of the area, before completing his landmark hat-trick in the dying stages.
Victory sees Real consolidate their place at the top of the table, though all of the attention will be on Ronaldo and whether Carlo Ancelotti's men can break Barca's tally when they host Ludogorets in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
With the record in their sight, Real poured men forward relentlessly right from the start and somehow failed to take a 10th-minute lead.
Sergio Alvarez got down well to keep out a Ronaldo header after he met Toni Kroos' corner with a towering header, and Sergio Ramos – making his 300th Liga appearance for Real – sliced the rebound wide from five yards out.
Ronaldo looked destined to break the deadlock three minutes later as he raced on to James Rodriguez's low cross, but Jonny Castro's last-ditch intervention was timed to perfection.
And the 29-year-old's frustrations grew a few moments later, as his acrobatic scissor-kick landed on the roof of the net.
Ronaldo eventually got his goal, though, as he stroked home a 36th-minute penalty after Castro was adjudged to have tripped him just inside the area.
Real were denied a two-goal margin at the interval, as Alvarez palmed away Rodriguez's controlled 18-yard effort.
Celta looked threatening at the start of the second half, as Fabian Orellana fired agonisingly wide of the right-hand post after skipping past Dani Carvajal.
Real capitalised on that let-off and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute as Ronaldo pounced on a loose bouncing ball just outside the area and fired past the helpless Alvarez.
And Ronaldo completed the scoring with nine minutes to go, tapping in Marcelo's low cross to claim, surpassing Telmo Zarra and Alfredo Di Stefano's hat-tricks haul.

Chelsea 3 Tottenham 0: No Costa, no worries for leaders

Spain forward Costa - scorer of 11 goals in 11 Premier League matches this season - missed Wednesday's London derby at Stamford Bridge due to suspension, but that mattered little.

Chelsea legend Drogba, who returned to the club from Galatasaray in July, led the line superbly as Jose Mourinho's unbeaten side - who top the table by six points - overcame a bright start from the visitors to win comfortably.

Harry Kane hit the crossbar early on for Tottenham, but Chelsea responded like the champions many fancy them to become with two quick-fire goals.

Eden Hazard set Chelsea on their way in the 19th minute before Drogba netted less than 180 seconds later for his second league goal of the season.

Substitute Loic Remy, who replaced Drogba, sealed the convincing home win 17 minutes from time as Tottenham's winless run at Chelsea - which dates back to 1990 - continued. 

Despite the absence of Costa, Chelsea fielded a familiar and settled line-up, while Tottenham, fresh from six wins in their last seven matches in all competitions, made just one change - with Roberto Soldado dropping to the bench despite his rare goal in a 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday.

Erik Lamela replaced Soldado for Spurs, who started brightly, and only the woodwork denied Kane in the seventh minute.

Aaron Lennon, continuing to impress after a recent recall, crossed for Kane from the right and the striker peeled off Gary Cahill to steer a header onto the bar, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois well beaten.

Kane then stripped Cahill off the ball in the 12th minute and charged into the box, only shooting just wide with his left foot.

The early chances buoyed the vocal travelling supporters, but they were soon silenced by a simple but brilliant Chelsea move.

Hazard played a neat one-two with Drogba and the Belgian glided past three Tottenham players before shooting under Lloris from a tight angle.

And Lloris was to blame for Chelsea's second goal - scored just three minutes later - after his sloppy clearance fell to Hazard.

He fed Oscar and the Brazilian's excellent ball played in Drogba, who beat Jan Vertonghen and took two touches before slotting home.

Chelsea dropped the tempo slightly following Drogba's strike, happy with their two-goal lead, but Willian shot twice at Lloris as the first half winded down.

Cahill took a knock to the head in the early stages, and was replaced at the break by highly rated Kurt Zouma, who had work to do early as Chelsea sat back.

The best Spurs could muster, though, was a tame Christian Eriksen shot from distance, and a wayward Vertonghen header, before Drogba came off to a healthy ovation.

And his replacement, Remy, wrapped up the three points, beating Vertonghen with strength before side-footing past Lloris in stylish fashion as Chelsea underlined exactly why they are widely considered title favourites with a dominant display.

Sunderland 1 Manchester City 4: Aguero stars as City take points

The striker took his goal tally to 19 in all competitions for the campaign as Manuel Pellegrini's side claimed the points on Wednesday to remain second in the table.

It looked like City may be in for a tricky evening against a team they have not beaten in their last four league meetings when Connor Wickham fortuitously put Sunderland ahead.

But Aguero had other ideas and, having rocketed home a brilliant solo goal, turned provider for Stevan Jovetic to make it 2-1 six minutes before half-time.

Suddenly struggling to repeat the defending that earned a goalless draw against Chelsea on Saturday, Gus Poyet's men were pegged back further as Pablo Zabaleta added a third goal not long after the interval.

And Aguero was back on centre stage in the 71st minute, converting coolly to wrap up a comfortable night's work for City.

The visiting side went into the game under a cloud of defensive issues with skipper Vincent company injured and Eliaquim Mangala suspended after his dismissal in Sunday's 3-0 win over Southampton.

Sensing a chance to attack the unfamiliar centre-back pairing of Martin Demichelis and Dedryck Boyata, Sunderland began the game impressively and should have taken the lead after just seven minutes.

Jack Rodwell was the guilty party when, having been picked out by Will Buckley, he struck his effort straight into former City team-mate Zabaleta with the goal gaping.

But the miss did not prove too costly as Wickham's goal, which had more than a hint of good fortune about it, put the home side ahead.

The forward played a superb one-two with Sebastian Larsson, before Zabaleta's sliding tackle ricocheted off his foot and into the corner.

City found an immediate riposte through the brilliance of Aguero, though.

The Argentinian picked the ball up 20 yards from goal, nutmegged Sebastian Coates and powered an unstoppable shot beyond former City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

He was not done there, however, and produced another world-class intervention in the 39th minute, brilliantly flicking Yaya Toure's fizzing pass sideways to Jovetic - who powered a strike through the legs of Pantilimon.

The hosts emerged from the break with confidence, epitomised by Larsson immediately stinging the hands of Joe Hart.

Yet City snuffed out their hopes of a comeback with a beautifully worked goal.

Toure sent the ball forward to Zabaleta, who played a lovely one-two with Samir Nasri and chipped over Pantilimon in a manner that would have made his countryman Aguero proud.

Further gloss was added to the scoreline, Aguero making a superb run and expertly turning James Milner's cross in off the inside of the post.

Champions League: Real Madrid - Liverpool 

 

10.03.2009 - it was a great game for Liverpool with Fernando Torres delivering an amazing solo performance and sending Liverpool into the quarter - finals. Yes, the guy who everyone are trolling right now was once the superhero who was responsible for the great performance of his team. This time Liverpool don't have their main man, but they still have Steven Gerard who scored the penalty after Gabriel Heinze had been penalised for handball and in the second half his second goal after two min. into the game. And their fourth goal scored by Andrea Dossena  which was his first goal for the club with two minutes remaining.
However Iker Casillas was able to stop Liverpool from making even bigger damage.Real weren't able to score an early goal so they can put pressure on Liverpool because they didn't gave them the chance.
Torres was untouchable with his runs and chances.
Real didn't had the chance to finish their attacks or bring order in their play so they couldn't complain with the score. Liverpool also won their only previous away game against Real Madrid – 1-0 in February 2009, thanks to a goal from Yossi Benayoun. It was a great year for Liverpool, but we'll see this time.
Much things has changed since then and tonight we'll see another game play, another performance, new players.
Last time Liverpool had Torres, but not anymore. And Real didn't had C.Ronaldo, but now they have the best player in the world in their rows.

Welbeck Injured

Arsenal will be delighted to eventually welcome back the 28-year-old striker, who has been on the sidelines since the second week of the season with a long-term foot problem. The former Montpellier man offers the Gunners a robust physical presence at the sharp end of the pitch, and he will afford Wenger even more attacking options.

Welbeck will be hoping to keep his place as a central striker.
It’ll be intriguing to see just how Wenger manages the situation regarding the two forwards, though. While the Frenchman claimed that the pairing can play together, it’s rare to see Arsenal deploy a system that accommodates two orthodox strikers.

Wenger also touched on Welbeck’s versatility, and that may come as something of a concern to the England international. He prefers to play as a central striker and, after thriving in that position since swapping the north-west for the south-east, you suspect he won’t be too optimistic about potentially being shifted onto the flanks again.

Spain did what they were supposed to do on Sunday by beating Luxembourg, just days after their disappointing upset loss to Slovakia. In the third qualifying match for the 2016 UEFA European Championship, Vicente del Bosque's team had no problems dispatching their opponent. FC Barcelona star Andres Iniesta made his debut as captain, starting along side his Barça teammates Busquets, Piqué, Bartra, and Jordi Alba. Pedro came on in the second half.
Spain took the field with plenty of new faces, among them Bartra, and were aligned in a 4-4-2 formation. Luxembourg allowed Spain’s midfielders plenty of space, providing easy pickings for Diego Costa, the Chelsea forward who had four fantastic opportunities in the game's first 24 minutes, and Alcácer. The first goal, however, came courtesy of David Silva, who, in the 26th minute, sent a shot from just outside the area into the upper corner of the net.
Spain were relentless on attack. But despite their constant threats, it was goalkeeper David De Gea who had to make a nice play on a dangerous cross in the 37th minute to keep the scoreboard at 1-0. Luxembourg were beginning to settle in when Spain's second goal came from Alcácer in the 41st. The two goal lead helped calm Del Bosque's squad for the second half. With a steady rain falling throughout, Spain deftly kept control of the game. Diego Costa kept pushing and in the 69th minute his persistence paid off with Spain's third goal after winning a scrum in front of the net.
An instant later, in the 70th minute, Pedro came on for Silva. Iniesta was then subbed out for Bernat, who would later add on the fourth and final goal.

The future of Ronaldo, who has enjoyed a stunning start to the season with three hat-tricks and 13 goals in just six games at the European champions, has been debated in the recent past, with many claiming he may be unhappy at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Chelsea were linked with a move for the second-most expensive player in the world last month, but manager Jose Mourinho was quick to shoot down any talk of a transfer, while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has also discussed Ronaldo recently.
The most enduring speculation has come from Old Trafford, with many believing that Ronaldo's ties to former club Manchester United could see him return at some point in the near future.
They were dealt a blow last week however, as Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes explained how it will be "impossible to get him out of Madrid". The 48-year-old has now perhaps revealed just why any club will struggle to prise him away from Real.
Talking to Spanish daily sports newspaper AS, Mendes said: "I no longer get calls from anyone asking about Cristiano. It's not worth them calling to ask for it.
"The price is that stated in his release clause – €1bn (£785m)."
Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances from 2003 to 2009 under Sir Alex Ferguson, helping steer United to three Premier League titles and a Champions League amongst numerous other club and individual honours.
But it's Ronaldo's relationship with both former manager Ferguson and the club itself which adds fuel to the speculation, with Louis van Gaal also insisting that a deal to bring Ronaldo back is "possible".
The star himself has stated that he is happy in Madrid however, but Mendes admits that Ronaldo maintains a soft spot for the Red Devils.
"United are in his heart and he is very respectful of people who show him affection but he is in Madrid to the end."
Despite persistent injury troubles, Mendes also insists his client is in a "phenomenal" physical state, and has backed him to break his own records.
Guillem Balague believes Cristiano Ronaldo can score 80 goals this season if he continues the form he is in.
"I'm sure that he will beat his personal record if he does not have any physical problems.
"For Cristiano, nothing is impossible. He is going to continue evolving and improving until he is 40. When he finishes it will be impossible for anyone to beat his records.
"Notice how Cristiano is a winger, he's not a striker, and his numbers are outrageous. He plays very far from goal and has to make significant efforts to arrive into the box. For that, he deserves even more credit for what he achieves.'
